Plans and Sketches of the New Buildings Erected or Proposed for Princeton University, July 1897. 40 pages. Produced by George Buchanan and Company, Philadelphia. Hardcover book in good condition. Some soiling to cover as seen and some internal foxing to pages.
To celebrate the University's 150th anniversary the trustees build some new buildings including the University Library, several dormitories (including Blair Hall), the Graduate College, a Physical Laboratory and a Lecture Hall. One of the new dormitories is also across Nassau Street at the intersection of Witherspoon and it today the home of Hamilton Jewelers.
The design philosophy of the new buildings is stated in the introduction, "Princeton is not a city, but a quiet old academic town, and for this no style presented so many advantages as the historic collegiate Gothic of Oxford and Cambridge."
The book contains a description and sketches of each of the new buildings. In the rear are fold-out floor plans for the buildings.
A rare piece of Princetoniana.
