“The Thrill of Victory…The Agony of Defeat.” I thought of this old ABC Wide World of Sports tagline when looking at this 1926 Stanford v. California Football Program cover recently.

The front of the cover shows the elation felt by the Berkeley players and the indifference of the Stanford players below them.

Flip the cover over and the Cal players are sitting with slumped shoulders and the Stanford players are shown in celebration.

A very clever use of a program cover. This Stanford team was coached by the legendary Pop Warner. Stanford-Cal games featured wrap-around use of covers often during this area.
