Father Theodore M. Hesburgh, who served as president of Notre Dame for 35 years titled his biography, God, Country, Notre Dame. The phrase is carved above the east door to the Basilica of the Sacred Heart on Notre Dame's campus. The phrase also recognizes the importance that the military had on the university. In Father Hesburgh's book he writes, "During World War II, the Navy established a Navy College Training Program on Notre Dame’s campus. It boosted Notre Dame’s economic status and enrollment, saving the university from decline, amidst the ongoing war."
